Click here for specific Inyo National Forest food storage regulations. Ask if food storage lockers are available at the campground before your trip.

  • All food and food related items must be stored in food storage lockers when they are available. In areas where food storage lockers are not available, keep food in your trunk. If you do not have a trunk, keep the food inside your vehicle, covered and out of sight.
  • Food must be stored in food storage lockers (or in your vehicle if applicable) at ALL times except when food is being prepared or eaten.
  • Bears may enter campsites during the day looking for food, even if people are present. Keep food locker doors closed and latched at all times.
  • The following are considered attractants or food to a bear, and should be stored properly. Ice chests, grocery bags, cardboard boxes, sealed drinks, water bottle containers (empty or full), empty coffee mugs, vitamins, gum, candy, and all toiletries including, toothpaste, soap, and sunscreen.
  • Dispose of garbage frequently in dumpsters and cans. Do not leave any garbage in your campsite, especially at night.
  • Keep your car’s interior clean and free of clutter. This will reduce the chance of a bear mistaking an article for food.
  • It is dangerous to try to retrieve anything from a bear once they have it.
  • Report any sightings or problems to the nearest Ranger Station
